PANTONE Limited Liability Company was started during the 1950s by brothers Mervin and Jesse Levine, M & J Levine Advertising. At that time, it was a commercial printing company. Currently, it is best known for its Pantone Matching System (PMS). This system is largely used in designing, printing, fashion, different types of coated and non-coated materials, both digitally and physically.

During 1956, the brothers hired a part-timer, Lawrence Herbert. He used his chemistry knowledge to systematise and simplify the company's stock of pigments and production of colored inks. By 1962, Herbert was running the ink and printing division at a profit, while the commercial-display division was in debt; he subsequently purchased the company's technological assets from the Levine Brothers and renamed them "Pantone".

HOW DID IT START? The PMS is a standardised system that reproduces color. It also gives all the colors a particular name or number, which makes it easy to differentiate. PMS system standardises all its colors so that it can be used by everyone to make sure that all their products match the color, despite the distance or time without actually contacting one another. After many years, Pantone became one of the leading companies that conveyed designers, manufacturers, product developers, etc to understand the color psychology and its importance towards the market. Thus, giving rise to the color of the year. It is rumoured that the leaders of the color industry, all over the world gathered together and then decided the first color of the year under Pantone.

PANTONE COLOR OF THE YEAR The Pantone color of the year started in 2000. The color of the year then was Cerulean Blue, it represented the sentiments, the trends, the beginning of a new era. Every year, after all the analysis and statistics a particular color is decided as the color of the year. It is then announced during the first week of December (previous year). In 2020, the Pantone color of the year is Classic Blue 19-4052.
